THANKS to everyone who responded to my survey last month...they were a huge help in preparing this document. Each November, the City Council meets in two days of work sessions to discuss the Council's goals for the upcoming year ("Goal Setting"). We're provided with a worksheet to optionally fill out prior to meeting one-on-one with the meeting facilitator a few weeks prior to the session. In my interview doc, here's what I listed as my priorities, concerns, and desired direction for City Council in 2019:
The highlights for items I'm proposing (or want us to prioritize) are:
- That the Public Safety Department create a strategic plan for the overall direction of the department in the next five years.
- Completion of the Parking Study and building a comprehensive proposal for parking Downtown, as well as College Hill.
- Modernizing our Zoning Ordinances to allow for the kinds of mixed-use projects needed on College Hill.
- That we pursue the concepts of Form-Based Zoning Downtown, and to gauge its usefulness for overall city planning and zoning.
- Moving forward with Greenhill Road Corridor Improvements including the upgraded intersection at Greenhill & South Main.
- Continued emphasis on North Cedar improvements, including a possible roundabout at Lone Tree and Center Street.
I also included lots of other items in the interview document -- some of which may gain traction with City Council, while others won't. But as an idea guy, I couldn't resist including them. I also put some of the ideas and suggestions I got from you in a "Parking Lot" on the last page...I'll research those topics in 2019 to see I can/should include them in next year's Goal Setting workshop.
Finally, just to be clear, these surveys and similar outreach efforts aren't my attempt to institute mob rule in our city; I appreciate my responsibility to weigh and filter the input I receive using my own best judgment...that's why you elected me. Still, it's critical to actively solicit input, and I'm grateful for the insights that residents provide. Keep it coming!
