A weird rumor circulated last week that I don't support curbside recycling for some odd reason. I just want to dispel that myth. I'm fascinated by environmental science, and took the state championship in environmental science my senior year of high school. In fact, I joined the Coast Guard partly because of its environmental protection, and was a trained HAZMAT and oil spill responder in Alaska. Even now, I dump out my giant paper leaf bags (and other people's, too) at the compost station so that I can re-use them and hopefully save a tree or two. I've switched most of my house lights to LED. My family bought two shares of CFU's Simple Solar plan. And I ride my bike or take the bus to work most days. For me, conservation isn't a political decision, but a moral imperative, and just good, plain common sense.
That said, curbside recycling is a no-brainer in my book, and I’m happy to support measures which make recycling convenient, efficient and affordable to all residents who desire it. I’m betting that city-wide curbside recycling will prove to be one of those initiatives; I would just need to see proposals to know whether privatized or city-led services make the most sense for curbside collection.
